Bio
After graduating in Computer Science and Mathematics from University College Cork, John worked as a software engineer responsible for designing and developing operating systems, language compilers and software applications. Having developed a solid understanding of the development process, John’s interests turned to the quality delivered to customers, the quality of the product, and the quality of support. His shift in emphasis coincided with the Internet explosion, and that shift opened doors to the business side of the organization.
John then worked as a Subcontract Manager in the Outsourcing/Insourcing industry. His work in Japan, Canada and India helped him realize and identify with the importance of well-defined business processes and maturity programs for both standalone and outsourcing companies.
During his career, John has developed and deployed multiple frameworks across different organizations including System Development Lifecycles (based on Waterfall and RUP), Service Management (based on ITIL), and Project and Portfolio Management (based on PMBoK). He has also been active in several maturity initiatives (based on CMMI, ITIL PMF and COBIT), both as a stakeholder and program manager.
The years spent working simultaneously with both business and IT departments have given John a firm understanding of how both can work together beyond the outdated IT-Business alignment model. He promotes a more dynamic and agile approach in which the best of both worlds are merged to realize an organization’s 1 + 1 = 3 potential.
In addition to ongoing public keynote engagements and his work in online social media marketing, John is developing an Enterprise Architecture body of knowledge. This initiative’s aim is further consolidating the work done by existing EA initiatives and promoting a pragmatic approach to both business and IT communities.
